Prime Minister's statement on Idlib crisis

The crisis in the rebel-controlled "Greater Idlib" region in northwestern Syria has escalated over the past month, following an offensive by the Syrian government against the rebel stronghold and growing involvement by both Turkey and Russia. On 20 February, two Turkish soldiers were killed in an airstrike. Yesterday, a large amount of Turkish soldiers were also killed in an airstrike on a army HQ in the Idlib countryside (at least 30+ confirmed casualties according to the Governor of Hatay Province). This has been the largest amount of deaths of Turkish soldiers during their involvement in the Syrian civil war. Russia has been alleged to have been behind both incidents, although this cannot yet be confirmed. Turkey has been threatening for the past month to launch a large-scale military offensive against the advancing Syrian government forces, demanding they return to the previous ceasefire lines according to the "Sochi Agreement". The growing tensions caused by the crisis in Idlib could potentially escalate to a full-scale war, dragging Russia and Turkey into direct conflict.
Prime Minister Hasan Çakar has issued the following statement on the matter:
"Firstly, let me issue my condolences to the families of the Turkish martyrs and the Turkish nations. The airstrike that occurred yesterday was an unnecessary and escalatory act. Who is the perpetrator of this airstrike is unknown, although it is so far generally believed to be Russia. If this is true, this is very alarming because this means that Turkish and Russian forces are directly fighting each other. The situation in Idlib is getting out of hand and all sides must de-escalate not escalate the situation. It is not in anyone's interest that this conflict turns into open war, regardless of its scope. A ceasefire and return to efforts for demilitirisation of this area is the best solution. Even if open war does not break out, no one wants the situation between Turkey and Russia to return to the state of tensions following the shoot-down of the Russian jet in 2015. It has proven after their reconciliation in 2016 that Russian-Turkish friendship and co-operation is better for the region's stability, during which numerous local ceasefire and peace agreements were implemented in Syria and the fight was concentrated on terror groups like KCK-PKK-YPG and Daesh. We urge both sides to maintain co-operation, lines of communication and work to de-escalate the tensions rather than further escalate the situation. Finally, I want to reiterate that the Hasani government believes the only solution to the Syrian conflict is a peace deal between the Government of Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian opposition."
