Presidential decree announces currency referendum next year

President Hasan Çakar has issued a presidential decree announcing a currency referendum will be held next year to decide on whether Hasanistan should adopt a national currency and what would be the nature of that currency. The legally-binding referendum will ask five questions: the first about whether an independent national or foreign currency should be used, the second about the potential name of a national currency, the third about what should the value of the currency be tied to (eg: whether it'll be fiat money, commodity-backed or based on labour value), the fourth about whether the currency should be used in physical or virtual form (eg: paper money or cryptocurrency, and the fifth about whether Autonomous Regions should have the right to have their own equivalent and equally-valued local currency.

A currency referendum was one of Çakar's electoral pledges he had made earlier this year and the development of a currency is part of the Hasanistan 2021 Vision announced in 2019. However, the issue has long been discussed previously in Hasani history. In 2013, Hasanistan had declared that the Kazakh Tenge was its official currency. However, there have been campaigns for an independent currency since that year and there had been numerous proposals before including the "Hasani som". Democratic Party of Ardajan deputy Shady Morsi, a long-time advocate of a currency referendum since 2013, has praised the decision and announced his intention to back his re-incarnated idea of a currency simply known as the "Hasani" (although not stated his opinion on the other questions). Currently, Hasanistan has no official currency.

The pre-determined ballot options for questions one, three, four and five have already been announced, although question two's ballot options will be decided in two months times following a period of popular suggestions from citizens and suffraged residents which begins today.

The date of the referendum was not fully declared in the decree, stating it will be concurrent with next year's due elections, however President Çakar has indicated it may happen earlier. The full decree may be read here.
