The governments of Brennonia and Hasanistan have issued a joint statement on the United States' military incursion into Venezuela, which has resulted in the capture of President Nicholas Maduro. The statement expresses concern about the situation and condemns it as a violation of international law.
The United States launched the operation at 02:00 ET on 3 January, conducting air strikes on bases in the capital Caracas and capturing Maduro and his wife in a special forces raid. According to President Trump in a subsequent press conference, the US will now administer Venezuela until it completes a political and economic transition. The operation notably took place twelve days after the Brennonian-Hasanistani union awarded Maduro the "Union Peace Prize".
The full statement reads as follows:
"Brennonia and Hasanistan collectively express our deep concern over the United States' military action against Venezuela. We believe this action contradicts international law, violates the sovereignty of Venezuela and threatens peace in the Americas. We declare our strongest opposition to the military operation. We call for the de-escalation of the conflict and restraint by the United States. There should not be further military action against Venezuela.
The safety and will of the people of Venezuela should be the priority. While there are many legitimate criticisms of Nicholas Maduro's government and its policies, the internal affairs of Venezuela should not be forcibly decided by external actors. Many of the American people also oppose this military action, which will bring unnecessary harm to their servicemen and cause a distraction from their own domestic issues.
Both states continue to closely monitor the rapidly developing situation."
